MAWL is an acronym of the basic sequence of instruction in developing leaders: Model - Assist - Watch - Leave.

This can be taught directly in the small group or classroom setting as a sequence of actions, but it is greatly reinforced by modeling in the harvest over an extended period of time.

For clarification, "leave" does mean abandonment, but rather entrusting the work to the new leader and not interfering, but being available as a sounding board and encourager.
