Four Stages / Four Fields

FOUR STAGES

The Four Stages or "Four Fields" diagram depicts Kingdom growth using a simple agricultural illustration. The seed which is planted, growing to maturity and then harvested, shows the process of making and multiplying disciples in the Kingdom.

This not only denotes a process, but also the fact that tools and methods are used in each stages of the process.

This is a very complex diagram and is best taught in stages, beginning with a broad overview.  It roughly follows the two parables in Mark 4 including the "Four Soils" (vs. 1-8) and the "Parable of the Seed" (vs. 26-29).  Begin by drawing a simple four-pane window with a circle at the center.

Start with the agricultural lesson:

  • In the upper left-hand square (Field 1), write GO. This depicts the sower who must go to the field in order to plant the seed.
  • In the upper right-hand square (Field 2), write SOW.  The sower then releases the seed. Draw an arrow from Field 1 to Field 2 showing the stage of development.
  • Move to the lower right-hand square (Field 3) and write GROW. This is the stage where the seed germinates and grows through various stages. Draw an arrow down from Field 2 to Field 3.
  • Then, go to the lower left-hand square (Field 4) and write GATHER. When the crop matures, the sower then goes to gather it into bundles. Draw an arrow across from Field 3 to Field 4.
  • Finally, you must draw one other element.  Ask participants what is missing in order to make a crop cycle: an arrow going from Field 4 to Field 1. This ensures that some of the grain (the best grain) is saved to plant in the next season.

Then share the spiritual lesson:

  • GO means we must get close to people who are far from God. This is our entry point.
  • SOW means that once we are close to people, we must communicate the gospel.
  • GROW is what begins to happen once the heart is activated. We as disciple-makers don't actually grow anyone, but like the sower, we create the environment for it to happen. In the same way that the farmer provides nutrition and protection for his crop, we as disciple-makers provide nurture and protection by walking closely with them.
  • GATHER is when disciples form new churches by being in community with one another. This represents church formation.

The circle in the center is sometimes used to depict leadership development. But we prefer to keep the Father's Heart at the center (and this integrates with the One Mission diagram). Leadership develops as we work in all four stages but in keeping close to the Father in cheerful obedience.

Spiritual Warfare

The transition from SOW to GROW (Field 2 to Field 3) is depicted beautifully by John 5.24 which shows that we move from death to life.

Moving from GATHER to GO (Field 4 to Field 1) is illustrated by John 12.24 where we move from life to death.  This is the death principle.

It may be evident that when you turn the Four Stages diagram on its side, you will see the Two Forces diagram.  This demonstrates that our work moving through these stages will be met with opposition by the enemy.  These two transitions can be thought of as the "gates of Hell" where we bring people from darkness to light, and where we send believers with the light back into dark places.
