This is a simple sequence of verses in Luke that demonstrates the way Jesus modeled for His disciples, then sent them, then commissioned those that were reached through their ministry.
Instructions:
Get participants to look up the following passages—the first two verses of Luke 8, 9, and 10:
Luke 8.1-2
Luke 9.1-2
Luke 10.1-2
Let someone read each passage one by one, asking these questions each time:
What was Jesus doing, and where did He do it?
What were the disciples doing, and where did they do it?
What Kingdom principles did Jesus want His disciples to observe and understand?
If you have time at this point, you may find it helpful to share a few more key details:
In Luke 8, Jesus models many other things.
Let participants study that chapter to find the many things Jesus models for them.
In Luke 9, (AFTER Jesus sent them out), the disciples said or did many silly and immature things.
Let participants study that chapter to find these things (there are at least seven).
What does that tell us about sending out workers into the harvest?
In Luke 10, Jesus sends others who presumably came from the disciples' work in chapter 9.
Again, what does this tell us about sending workers into the harvest?
How does this communicate Jesus' desire to multiply the Kingdom?
What lessons do we learn from the rest of this chapter?
And for an extra insight, go to Luke 11 and read the first verse.
Again, what does this tell us about sending workers into the harvest?
How is our involvement in the work likely to inform our prayer life?
